Morano Calabro

One of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, in the Calabrian heart of the park

Direct answer

What is there to see in Morano Calabro, and how does it combine with a day on the Lao?

Morano Calabro is a village in the Pollino National Park, province of Cosenza, part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy network. Its shape is why it is called the Pollino nativity scene: the houses climb the slope in stacked rings up to the remains of the Norman castle. It lies about half an hour from the Lao valley, where River Tribe has its base: there are no river activities in Morano, but the village is one of the cultural destinations most visited by guests staying for the rafting.

01

Why they call it the Pollino nativity scene

The image comes from the urban structure. The houses are arranged in stacked rings along an isolated rise, with red tiled roofs, narrow alleys, stairways and arcades descending towards the historic quarters. Seen from the valley, the outline recalls a nativity scene built on a slope.

At the summit stand the ruins of the Norman castle, later extended over the following centuries. From the top the view covers the Coscile plain and the summits of the massif, and from there the logic of the settlement becomes legible at a glance.

02

The churches and the historic fabric

The village holds several historic churches, among them the Collegiata dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, one of the oldest in the settlement, and the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena, recognisable by its majolica-clad dome and the bell tower that dominates the skyline.

The walk is uphill and calls for comfortable shoes: the gradients are constant and the surface is often stone. This is a visit to take slowly, not a twenty-minute stop.

03

Where it sits within the park

Morano belongs to the Calabrian side of the Pollino National Park, the largest protected area in Italy, also recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Routes towards the high ground of the massif, where the Loricato pines grow, start from here.

The village sits differently from the Lao valley: the river runs further west, towards the border with Basilicata and then towards the Tyrrhenian. They are two distinct sectors of the same park, both reachable within the same day.

04

How to pair it with rafting

The most common combination is the rafting descent in the morning, when the water is colder but conditions are better, and the village visit in the afternoon. The transfer from Laino Borgo takes about half an hour by car.

Those choosing the longer formats, such as the two-day expeditions, prefer to give Morano a separate half-day. River activities remain on the Lao in any case: you go to Morano for the village, not for the river.
