The Lao River & The Canyon

A protected ecological corridor carved into the rock

Direct answer

Where is the Lao River located and why is it central to the rafting in Calabria?

The Lao is the reference river for the rafting in the Pollino National Park. It originates in Basilicata with the name of Mercure, enters Calabria and crosses the natural reserve of the Lao Valley before reaching the Tyrrhenian Sea. River Tribe has its base in the locality San Primo and Laino Borgo, in the Calabrian sector of the valley. The descents are not all the same: the navigable section, duration and difficulty change according to the chosen experience, water level, weather and guide evaluation.

01

From Mercure to Lao, between Basilicata and Calabria

The waterway geographically connects two regions. In the Lucanian area it is known as Mercure; after entering Calabria it takes the name Lao and continues in the province of Cosenza. The Calabria Region indicates Laino Borgo and Papasidero among the places linked to the rafting and the valley, together with the other villages crossed by the river before the Tyrrhenian coast.

This distinction avoids a frequent misunderstanding in research: the Pollino is both Calabrian and Lucanian, while the River Tribe base and the descents on the Lao presented on the site are located on the Calabrian side, very close to the border with the Basilicata.

02

What makes Canyon del Lao special

The Lao River Valley Nature Reserve protects a landscape of gorges, vegetation and river environments in the Pollino Park. The official Calabria Region sheet dedicated to the canyon experience describes an extended itinerary of approximately 16 kilometres, with almost 12 kilometers of gorge and walls that can reach 300 metres. This data concerns the long itinerary presented by the source, not each commercial proposal.

River Tribe offers different experiences: the Fun Trip is short and introductory; the Grand Canyon crosses the most representative sector of the gorges; Expedition formulas require more time and preparation. The page of each descent indicates duration, minimum age and level to avoid the name "rafting on Lao" hiding important differences.

03

How to choose a descent on the Lao

For the first approach, age, confidence with the water and composition of the group matter. Families and beginners can start from accessible experiences; those who have already paddled or are looking for a more intense day can compare Grand Canyon, No Limits and expeditions. The price is not the only difference: time on the river, commitment and requirements change.

Before confirmation, the staff asks for information about the group and the guide evaluates the conditions. The published route describes the product, but does not replace the operational decision of the day: flow rate, weather and access may require adaptation.

04

Rafting, territory and living room

A descent allows you to see the valley from inside, but does not exhaust the territory. From Laino Borgo you can combine the river with a night in River Camp, a trekking in Pollino or a bike tour. Papasidero adds the Reserve, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli and the Grotta del Romito.

For a multi-day stay it is best to alternate just one main activity per day with free time and visits. It's a more realistic way to experience Pollino than a sequence of compressed experiences.
