Pollino National Park

192,565 hectares between Calabria and Basilicata, in the UNESCO Geoparks network

Direct answer

Is the rafting in the Pollino done in Calabria or in Basilicata?

The Pollino National Park extends between Calabria and Basilicata, but the rafting River Tribe on the Lao River starts from the Calabrian side, at Laino Borgo in the province of Cosenza. The Basilicata remains an essential part of the destination: the river originates as Mercure on the Lucanian side and the massif, the paths and many villages cross the regional border. For a complete outdoor holiday you can therefore do rafting in Calabria and dedicate other days to trekking, MTB or e-bike in the different sectors of Pollino.

01

A national park in two regions

The Park Authority indicates an extension of 192,565 hectares and 56 municipalities between Calabria and Basilicata. The territory includes the Pollino massif, the Orsomarso mountains and Monte Alpi. In 2015 it entered the Geoparks network under the aegis of UNESCO; the UNESCO sheet describes the massif as a border system between the two regions.

This dimension explains why times and accesses should not be read only on the map. Going from the Lao valley to the high altitude areas or the Lucanian side requires real travel on mountain roads: a balanced itinerary leaves room and does not concentrate everything in the same day.

02

From rafting to the peaks of Pollino

The rafting belongs to the river geography of the Lao, in the Calabrian sector. The trekking instead leads towards beech woods, plateaus and peaks: UNESCO indicates Serra Dolcedorme at 2,267 metres, Monte Pollino at 2,248 meters and other peaks over two thousand. They are experiences with very different logistics, equipment and preparation.

MTB and e-bike allow you to read woods, villages and connections, while river walking, canyoning, kayak and packraft maintain the relationship with the water. The activity page helps you choose by level and available time, without presenting the Pollino as a single adventure park.

03

Loricated pines, beech forests and geological heritage

The Loricato pine is the emblem of the Park and grows naturally in Italy in the Calabrian-Lucan Apennines within its perimeter. Among the specimens studied is Italus: research published in Ecology estimated its age at around 1,230 years, defining it as the oldest scientifically dated living tree in Europe.

The Geopark also includes karst environments, caves and ancient beech forests. These elements are not decorations for a rafting page: they explain why River Tribe proposes combining the river, the path and reading the territory in the same stay.

04

How to arrange multiple days between Calabria and Basilicata

Based on Laino Borgo, a first day can be dedicated to Lao. The next day you can choose a trekking or a bike tour consistent with weather and training; a slower day allows you to visit villages or the Grotta del Romito. To cross other sectors of the Park it is better to allow additional time.

River Tribe organizes the outdoor core and the stay at River Camp. The information from the Park Authority and the Municipalities remains the reference for openings, cartography, events and accesses that do not depend on the operator.
