Trekking on the snow of Pollino

Equipped with ciaspole, gaiters and snowshoes we set off for a 2-hour snowshoe hike. A varied route: among woods, Loricati pines and the white snow!

Snowshoeing in the Pollino Park

A few days ago, Mauro and his girlfriend Francesca chose to book a snow excursion with the ciaspole, taking advantage of their weekend in the Pollino Park. Francesca confided in us that she didn't imagine there would be all this snow in our area, but in reality there is a lot of it! In fact, Mount Pollino is the highest in the south and our park is still a very wild area, which offers many possibilities for outdoor activities for all levels.

Mauro had already been to these areas and had heard about River Tribe, which is why he called us and wanted to organize a day on the snow with his partner.

The activity of the ciaspole is also ideal for those who are just starting out, in fact it is the first time for Francesca who couldn't wait to get involved.

The ciaspole are similar to rackets that are anchored to your shoes (we recommend wearing waterproof trekking shoes). The peculiarity of the ciaspole is that you have the freedom to walk even where the snow is deep, impossible to face with normal shoes. In this way they will be able to reach wild places where they can feel at one with the surrounding nature.

We arranged to meet Mauro and Francesca early in the morning at Rifugio Fasanelli, a beautiful structure located in the mountains, on the Basilicata side. The pollino Park is located between the Calabria and the Basilicata and sometimes it happens that you start an excursion in one region and end it in the other! 🙂 The Fasanelli Refuge is the perfect place to start hiking because it is already at a high altitude, it is easy to reach by car, it has rooms overlooking breathtaking views and an excellent restaurant.

Together with them, there was also the rest of the group, made up of us and a group of friends from Puglia. Equipped with ciaspole, gaiters and snowshoes we set off for our snowshoeing which lasted about 2 hours. The route is varied: sections where you walk in the woods, others where you can see the Loricati pines, still others where it seems like you are on another planet because there is only the white snow... a spectacle!

For those who think that not being trained enough is a problem for this activity, let's immediately say that this is not the case! The fundamental rule in outdoor is that the pace is the slowest, so there is nothing to worry about. Furthermore, our expert and certified guides will be able to explain to you step by step what you need to do to make the most of this experience in total safety and while having fun.

For Mauro and Francesca it was like celebrating an early Valentine's Day (since they had work commitments on February 14th) and it was perfect! In the end Francesca was really happy with the snowshoeing, now she is ready for a nice lunch at the refuge and a SPA circuit in Rotonda together with her partner.

After a day like this we reflected on the benefits of the trekking on the snow:

  • do physical activity;
  • oxygenate your body and breathe pure air;
  • you will be able to reach otherwise unreachable places;
  • you will be able to make new friends with people who love nature, outdoor sports and everything that is genuine;
  • you will discover the Pollino Park which is the largest and wildest in Italy;
  • but above all after all this physical activity, you can sit at the table and eat local products without feeling guilty!!! 🙂
