To choose well, you need to separate the slopes: the River Tribe descents start from Laino Borgo, on the Calabrian side, while trekking and bike descents can also take place on the Lucanian side. In a single day it is better to concentrate on one activity; with two or three days you can combine water, mountains and culture, checking access, weather and requirements with the guides.

Rafting and water activity on the Lao River
The Lao is the reference of the Calabrian Pollino for rafting and canoeing according to the Calabria Region. River Tribe offers descents of different duration and difficulty, as well as experiences such as river walking, packraft and kayak. Not all of them cover the same sector and not all of them are suitable for beginners or families. Range, weather, access and group determine the actually practicable proposal; calendar and requirements must be checked on the individual form.
Trekking between peaks and loricated pines
The massif includes Serra Dolcedorme, Monte Pollino, Serra delle Ciavole and other reliefs distributed on the two sides. The value of an itinerary does not depend only on the summit: woods, ridges and stands of loricated pine offer different experiences. Italus is a loricated pine with an age estimated at approximately 1,230 years in the scientific study published in 2018. Before walking you need an updated route, access and conditions; the Park Authority's cartography is the initial reference, not a guarantee of practicability on the day.
Mountain bike and e-bike: they are not the same choice
MTB places more emphasis on training and technique on dirt roads and descents; the e-bike assists pedaling uphill but does not eliminate balance, braking and attention to the surface. River Tribe distinguishes panoramic tours, connections between villages, routes along the valley and advanced proposals at high altitude. To assign vehicle and route you need the participant's height, recent experience and group level. Condition of the trails and weather may require a variation.
Laino Borgo and Papasidero beyond sport
Laino Borgo is the River Tribe base and hosts the Sanctuary of the Chapels, a religious complex documented by the Municipality. Papasidero connects the Lao Valley to the Grotta del Romito, a prehistoric site known for the graffiti of the Bos primigenius, and to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Constantinople along the river. A cultural visit must be planned separately from the activity: times, access and transfers are not implicit in the rafting booking.
How to organize one, two or three days
With one day it is more realistic to choose just one main experience and leave room for briefings, transfers and changes. In two days you can combine rafting and trekking or rafting and bike, avoiding concentrating two demanding activities in the same afternoon. With three days it is possible to add villages and archeology or a second guided experience. The meeting point of each exit must be checked: Pollino does not automatically mean Laino Borgo and Calabria does not automatically mean the Lucanian side.
