Rafting in Calabria

The Lao, in the Calabrian Pollino, is where regional rafting concentrates

Direct answer

Where do you go rafting in Calabria, and why is it almost always the river Lao?

In Calabria, rafting with certified guides is concentrated in the valley of the river Lao, in the Calabrian sector of the Pollino National Park, between the municipalities of Laino Borgo and Papasidero. The Calabria Region lists this basin among the regional references for the activity. There is therefore no offering spread across the whole region: there is one river that combines flow, gradient and access suitable for paddling a raft. River Tribe has its base in the San Primo district of Laino Borgo and runs descents of differing length and difficulty on that same watercourse.

01

Why Calabrian rafting concentrates on the Lao

For a river to be navigable by raft with any continuity, three conditions must hold at once: a flow that lasts for much of the season, a gradient able to generate rapids without making the course unmanageable, and roads that let vehicles reach the put-in and take-out points. In Calabria many watercourses have a torrential regime and stay dry or unusable for long stretches of the year.

The Lao valley, by contrast, offers that combination. The river rises in Basilicata as the Mercure, crosses into Calabria and carves a limestone gorge in the heart of the Pollino Park before reaching the Tyrrhenian. It is this stretch that appears in the regional records devoted to rafting.

02

From the Tyrrhenian coast to the put-in

The Laino Borgo base sits a short distance from the motorway junction and from the coastal towns of the upper Cosenza Tyrrhenian. Praia a Mare, San Nicola Arcella, Scalea and Diamante are all within an hour by car, and Maratea is reachable from the Lucanian side. That makes rafting compatible with a beach holiday, without travel swallowing the whole day.

Proximity to the sea does not change the nature of the activity, however: this is river navigation in a natural environment, with cold water even in summer and a compulsory technical briefing before departure.

03

Not all descents are the same

The phrase “rafting in Calabria” covers very different products. The Fun Trip lasts about an hour, starts in front of the base and has a minimum age of four: it is the introductory format, suited to families and to anyone who has never sat in a raft. The Grand Canyon crosses the most representative sector of the gorges and requires participants to be fourteen.

The longer formats — No Limits, Fast & Furious and the two-day expeditions — take from four hours to a full day and assume adequate physical condition. Each descent page states duration, minimum age and level: reading it prevents booking the wrong experience.

04

When it is worth coming

The season typically runs from spring to autumn. In spring the flow is stronger and the rapids livelier: the river in April is not the river in August, and that affects the choice of route. In the summer months conditions are more stable and the short formats become accessible even to groups with young children.

Flow, weather and group composition are assessed by the guides before the operating stretch is confirmed. It can therefore happen that the itinerary is adapted from the one expected at booking.

Verified highlights

  • A single regional basin with continuous guided descents: the Lao valley
  • Operational base at Laino Borgo, in the Calabrian sector of the Pollino Park
  • Tyrrhenian coast reachable in under an hour from the base
  • Different routes by duration, minimum age and technical level

How to plan a rafting day in Calabria

  • Choose the descent by minimum age and duration, not by price alone
  • Consider the season: flow is stronger in spring than in summer
  • Allow for transfer time from the coast, within an hour of the main resorts
  • Bring a swimsuit, shoes that can get wet and a dry change of clothes
  • Check the requirements for minors, who take part only if authorised
