Snowshoeing in the Pollino: walking on snow safely

Snowshoeing in the Pollino Park: when to go, how to dress, what preparation is needed and why to rely on a guide in the mountains in winter.

When snow covers the plains and beech forests, Pollino becomes a different mountain. The ciaspole allow you to walk without sinking too much, but they do not transform winter into a simple environment: orientation, weather, wind and state of the snow cover require attention.

A guided snowshoe hike is chosen after evaluating conditions and group. There are walks accessible to those who are just starting out and longer itineraries, with greater altitude differences. The guide regulates the pace, stops and route; if the mountain changes, the program also changes.

To dress well you need waterproof boots, technical socks, winter trousers, breathable layers, windproof jacket, gloves, hat and sunglasses. In the backpack: water, small snack, sunscreen and a dry layer. The ciaspole do not replace adequate footwear.

Sunset rides add a special light, but require even more precise equipment and time management. You should not follow random tracks or underestimate the reduction in visibility.

The season is not decided by calendar: it depends on the snow. Contact River Tribe before organizing the trip and indicate the number of participants, age and walking habits. You will receive a proposal compatible with the real conditions of the Pollino.
