Is it worth rafting the Lao in August, over Ferragosto or in September?

All three periods work, but they are not equivalent. August is the busiest month and the week of Ferragosto — the Italian mid-August holiday — is when places run out first: if your dates are fixed, ask about availability well ahead. September keeps pleasant temperatures with far fewer people in the valley, which is exactly why many prefer it. The water level changes through the season and does not follow the calendar: the guide confirms the stretch on the day, based on flow and weather. The same rule applies to public holidays and long weekends, which behave like small-scale Ferragostos.

August and Ferragosto: what changes

In August the valley runs at full capacity: more groups, more departures, less flexibility on times. During Ferragosto week demand concentrates into a handful of days and the most convenient slots — late morning above all — are the first to close. The way the river is run does not change; availability does. People who turn up in those days without booking often find only leftover times, or a different route from the one they had in mind.

September: why many prefer it

In September the tourist pressure drops sharply while temperatures stay mild for much of the month. You can pick your time slot, groups are smaller and the valley is quieter. It is also the easiest period in which to combine the river with something else — a hike, an e-bike ride, a village to visit — without cramming everything into a single day.

Water level and weather

The Lao is a natural-flow river: its volume varies through the year and cannot be read off a calendar. After heavy rain the river rises and some features change; in drier spells certain stretches become less suitable and the guide may move the group elsewhere. That check happens on the day and is part of the guide's job, not a mishap: the card describes the proposal, the actual state of the river confirms or amends it.

When to book, holidays and long weekends

The practical rule is simple: the more fixed your dates, the earlier you should ask. For Ferragosto, for public holidays and for long weekends, requests arrive weeks ahead. On low-season weekdays the margin is far wider. If you are travelling with a large group or with children, booking early also means choosing the right route rather than the only one left.

Frequently asked questions

Is there enough water for rafting in August?
The Lao is runnable in the summer months, but the flow varies. The guide checks conditions on the day and confirms the stretch that suits the group.
August or September?
It depends what you are after. August has more departures and more people; September still has mild temperatures, smaller groups and more freedom to choose your time.
How far ahead should I book for Ferragosto?
Well ahead. It is the busiest week of the year and the most convenient slots go first.
What happens if it rains on the day?
Rain alone does not cancel the activity: you are already wet. What counts is the river's flow and the overall conditions, which the guide assesses before departure.
