To the Achaeans of the ancient Ionian colonies of Magna Grecia, it must have appeared from the coast a bit like the Olympus of the motherland, with its majestic shape that joins the sky to the earth, home of the Gods that populated their fascinating mythological world.
According to some historical researcher, it seems that the Massif of Pollen name was given from the Achei of Sibari, from “Mons Apollineum”, Mount of Apollo, because they chose our mountain as home of one of the most beloved and significant gods, like the son of Zeus, Apollo. From the Massif of Pollino, where there are several peaks above 2000 mt., it derives the name “Pollino National Park”. With its 192 thousand hectares it is the largest National Park in Italy.
From an archeological point of view, inside the park, there is the Romito Cave: symbol of the cave is a rock engraving about one meter long representing a bovid, dated about 10800 years before Christ.
Pollino is a casket of incredible natural beauty and great landscape contrasts that make it one of the most interesting and extraordinary parks in Europe; a natural pearl set in the heart of the Mediterranean that embraces two regions, Calabria and Basilicata. The Park is rich in rivers, waterfalls, springs and ponds that turn it into a real water kingdom, making the whole territory a real green explosion, with very rare tree species, including the millennial “Pino Loricato”.
Pollino, due to its geological nature and given the numerous chasms that fall into the bowels of the earth, also attracts lovers of speleology, as well as all fans of outdoor sports. Thanks to the beautiful and majestic natural scenery there is the opportunity to engage in adrenaline adventures such as rafting, canyoning, kayaking, mountain bike or in relaxing moments like walks surrounded by nature, trekking or yoga.
