Laino Borgo has become famous thanks to rafting: from here begins the most suggestive section of the Canyon. Some unmissable events are: “Palio dei Ciucci” in august and “Giudaica” in the period of Easter. Typical dishes are the “rascatelli with tomato sauce”, a handmade pasta which is made with a little iron (one by one!). Delicious!
Laino Borgo was born on the banks of the Lao River and for this reason, according to some experts, the name of the city originates from Lainos, “of Lao River”. Laino Borgo preserved an authenticity elsewhere lost. There are several family-run restaurants and farmhouses, with genuine products and typical local cuisine.
The history of the Lao River is very rich. In Laino Borgo, Località Santa Gada, in the Lao River Valley, were found the first finds of what is thought to be Laos Antica.
Figurines, tools, perfectly aligned walls, ornaments, coins, and even a skeleton.
It is from Magna Grecia colonies who lived in this area that Laos River (from the Greek Λᾶος) takes the name of Lao River.
The archeological excavations are just a few minutes walk from our River Tribe base.
It is a UNESCO Geosite, a truly magical place that you can admire in all its splendor during the rafting descent. The old town, now abandoned due to an earthquake that hit the area in the 80s, today is characterized by the presence of a Castle and the basilica of San Teodoro, a scattered hotel with restaurant and workshops of artists.
River Tribe offers Mountain Bike tours with different trails in order to discover what the territory offers and taste typical products in the nice square of the village.
