We are on the Tyrrhenian side of the Basilicata region, beyond the borders of the Pollino National Park and precisely in Maratea: behind the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea, lies Mount Crivo, 1277 mt high. A small mountain from which you can admire the most important peaks of the Lucan parks and the enchanting marine scenery of the coast of Campania, Basilicata and Calabria. Mount Crivo is part of the Natura 2000 Network. A Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area under the European Commission’s Habitats Directive. It is a site of Community Importance where conservation measures necessary for the maintenance and/or restoration of natural habitats, populations and species have been applied.

The starting point of our walk is located in the village of Brefaro, located at 550 mt altitude, a few kilometers from the center of Maratea. Our excursion begins on a stony path, the vegetation is composed mainly of small isolated trees of wild pear, hawthorn and broom. At the end of our path you arrive in a grassy plateau, used as a cattle station, where you can still notice the remains of an old barn built of dry stone, along with a newly built cottage and a fence. The path from this moment begins to be more challenging, presenting large sharp surfacing stones and unstable rocks. Arrived at 1150 mt, on the second highest ridge of Mount Crivo stands a wrought iron cross, built by the Oblate friars in 1961: from this magic point, overlooking a natural balcony, you can enjoy a spectacular view over the entire Gulf of Policastro. In particularly clear days you can also see the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands. Along the ridge, after a few hundred meters you reach the summit, 1277 mt altitude, from which you can admire all the most important peaks of the Calabrian/Lucan parks.
