The route reaches the fourth highest peak of the Pollino National Park and leads us to the discovery of Italus, the oldest living tree in Europe. Our starting point will be Colle dell’Impiso, at 1560 mt on the sea level and after crossing the beech wood, the Plains of Toscano and Pollino begin the climb to the top. Serra delle Ciavole is a site of community interest, its name derives from the “jackdaw”, a bird that in local dialect is called “ciavola”. It has two peaks, the lowest, of 2127 mt on the sea level (considered the main) and the geographical of 2130 mt on the sea level. We continue our excursion descending the south-east ridge of the mountain, in front of us a unique scenery, among the white rock, silhouettes of loricate pines stand out: among these rises a unique Loricato Pine from the extravagant ramification: it looks dry, but from some branches are evident the green inflorescences: it’s Italus, natural monument and oldest tree in Europe, over 1230 years. After having immortalized this wonderful tree, we walk towards the plains and take the road back.
